Michael Baumgartner

Michael Baumgartner is a lecturer at the University of Bern, Switzerland, where he also earned his doctorate in 2005 with a dissertation on causation entitled “Complex Causal Structures”. The dissertation reassesses the prospects of a regularity theoretic account of causation and develops a procedure of causal reasoning that is custom-built to deterministic data.

His publications include an introduction to the philosophy of causation entitled “Kausalität und kausales Schliessen” which he co-authored with Gerd Grasshoff and several papers on causation and causal reasoning.

Most recently, he has increasingly been working on matters concerning the intricate interplay between formal and natural languages, in general, and concerning logical formalization, in particular. In collaboration with Timm Lampert, this work resulted in the two papers “Adequate Formalization” and “The Unity of Logical Form”.
