Title: Fringe theories and epistemic tolerance
Abstract: In this talk, I push the upward bound of our epistemic tolerance in science to its reasonable limit. In particular, I support the unpopular position that we should actively cultivate a receptive attitude towards even the wildest fringe theories. First, I unpack the concepts of ‘fringe’ and ‘mainstream’ and motivate the use of this distinction as a tool for understanding transformative theory change. On my analysis, fringe theories occupy a marginal position relative to mainstream theories that are accepted through scientific consensus. As such, to know whether or not a given theory qualifies as ‘fringe’ requires a historical index: fringe theories can become mainstream and vice-versa. This is a foundation for epistemic tolerance. I document a recurrent pattern in which authoritative experts silence unorthodox scientists who propose fringe theories that are later embraced. The marginalization of fringe theories has stalled field-transforming theoretical progress more frequently than has been traditionally acknowledged in the philosophy of science. Mainstream theories can become entrenched to the point that scientists’ monistic set of theoretical expectations restricts their ability to acknowledge novel observations. This can lead to failures to pursue important research, as when entrenchment in the miasma theory fostered skepticism that diseases could be spread by germs. Finally, I ask, how far can we reasonably take our tolerance towards fringe theories? Is it reasonable to seek a way to distinguish between the promising theories and the noise?
